In the dash for new energy sources, particularly in the UK we seem to be finding more shale gas than oil, for example the BBC reports – http://bbc.in/19HchNC.
Have you wondered why there seems to be more gas than oil?
Oil exists underground. It was made there when organic rich sediments called Kerogen were ‘cracked’ by deep heat and pressure to form oil molecules.
The temperature and pressure increase with depth. Go deeper than 5000 metres and the oil is further cracked into methane. So – drill deeper and you find gas, not oil. This is called the Oil Window and that is why the search for energy will produce more gas than oil.
